Kali 2.0 Nvidia Installation (Fixed)

Fixed Starting Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes Error (Segmentation fault at address)

Posted by Adones Pitogo on Mar 3, 2016

Fixed stuck on Starting Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes... by removing libglamoregl.so from /usr/lib/xorg/modules.

The Fix

Check /var/log/Xorg.x.log for Segmentation fault at address error:

[ 5.370] (II) Loading sub module "glamoregl"
[ 5.370] (II) LoadModule: "glamoregl"
[ 5.370] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so
[ 5.373] (II) Module glamoregl: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[ 5.373] compiled for 1.17.2, module version = 1.0.0
...
...
[ 5.386] (EE)
[ 5.386] (EE) Segmentation fault at address 0x6f

If you have that error, then remove libglamoregl.so from /usr/lib/xorg/modules.

  • mv /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so ~/

If you want to install nvidia-kernel-dkms instead of the driver from Nvidia website, remove the installed nvidia driver first that we compiled earlier:

  • nvidia-installer --uninstall

Then install nvidia-kernel-dkms

  • apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms -y

Then reboot. Enjoy!
